The Pittsburgh Steelers don’t plan to move on from Mike Tomlin as their head coach. After another season with a one-and-done in the playoffs, fans of the team took to Twitter to express their displeasure with the current state of the franchise and asked for a change in the head coaching position.
However, it looks like changes are not coming to Pittsburgh, who have lost all of their previous six playoff games. A recent report from Gerry Dulac, a beat writer for the team, states that the team isn’t looking to move on from Tomlin, who has been their head coach since the 2007 season and won Super Bowl XLIII during his tenure:
“Despite a widespread public outcry and another embarrassing early exit from the postseason, the Steelers are not planning to make any move involving coach Mike Tomlin, according to team sources.”
Pittsburgh was not considered among the favorites to make the AFC playoffs at the start of the season. However, they started the year excellently, with a 10-3 record despite the quarterback position being inconsistent for most of the year. But they lost their final five games, including the playoffs, and the year again ended in disappointment.
Their last playoff win came in the 2016 season, when they made it to the AFC Championship Game before being defeated by the New England Patriots. That year, Ben Roethlisberger was still in his prime, while Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell were part of the roster.
Since that AFC Championship Game loss, however, they did not register a single win in the postseason:
- 2016: Lost the AFC Championship Game to Patriots 36-17
- 2017: Lost the AFC Divisional Round to Jaguars 45-42
- 2020: Lost the AFC Wild Card Round to Browns 48-37
- 2021: Lost the AFC Wild Card Round to Chiefs 42-21
- 2023: Lost the AFC Wild Card Round to Bills 31-17
- 2024: Los the AFC Wild Card Round to Ravens 28-14
In 2017, they qualified automatically for the Divisional Round as the NFL still had a 6-team playoff for each conference, but were upset by the Jaguars. The three most recent losses all came away from home, while in 2020, the Browns defeated them at the Acrisure Stadium.
